A tiny island that is actually a volcano, Satonda can be found north of Sumbawa Island. The ring-shaped island is the poster child for pure exotica with its jewelled lake nestled in the midst of the caldera and pale sand beaches fringing the greenery that surrounds the pint-sized island. Charter guests can enjoy the unique opportunity of swimming in the Caldera where the cool waters are clean. You can take walking trails around the former rim and spend hours on the beach with its one of a kind pumice stones littering the sands and snorkelling possible in the shallows where coral swatches and swaying sea grasses strike visual interest. Another aspect that makes Satonda so intriguing is the ancient myth and legends that surround it. There’s a local myth that Satonda is a forbidden island, another myth about the hope tree that grants wishes, and another about the island being an exiled place for princesses.
Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Sangeang Island Volcano ripples across the horizon and rises to the classic cone peak that we associate with picture book volcanoes. The island is a slip of 13km and is mostly made up of a volcano. Sangeang actually boasts two peaks of near-identical heights - both rising to an impressive 2000 meters above sea level. Named Doro Api and Doro Mantoi, the former is the more active volcano although both have steamy active vents. If lucky, from the deck of your yacht you can see the puffs of ash that occasionally billow from the peak - making a striking visual, especially against an orange and pink sunset. Sangeang also boasts divine diving and has a truly intriguing underwater space. Being under the shadow of the volcano means that underwater hot springs, bubbles, and warm sands can be explored. Back on the surface and the soil here is rich in nutrients and in the town of Bonto you can discover how local farming families live off the gifts of the land.
