The Hauraki Gulf encompasses some of the best of New Zealand tourist attractions. It includes Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Auckland Region. There are over 50 ""motu"" (islands) to explore, and being so close to Auckland, they make for excellent day trips. The Hauraki Plains are a rather loosely defined area on the gulf. The main attraction in the Plains is the Hauraki Rail trail, a cycle trail in several stages which can take up to five days if all sections are completed. It uses parts of an old railway system for its route. This is one of the most popular cycle trails in New Zealand and it offers spectacular scenery.
The Coromandel Peninsula on North Island forms one arm of the Hauraki Gulf. Despite being near areas of high population, the peninsula is relatively isolated due the rugged terrain, which lends itself to many adventurous activities. Thee include 4WD tours, ziplining, mountain biking, tramping and hiking. There are many stunning beaches, bays and coves to choose from and these offer surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, exploring and water tours. The island was once owned and was home to Sir George Grey, then governor of New Zealand. Today there is plenty on the island for nature lovers. There are several walks on the island and the garden of the restored house still has many beautiful peacocks. The exotic animals which Grey introduced have done a great deal of harm and strong efforts are being made to restore the island to its natural state.

Harataonga Bay is a magnet for people with two things in mind, fishing and camping. The fishing is excellent and with the right rod, line and bait, even marlin can be caught. The bay was used by the BBC for the Castaway series. It is a fantastic destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. The bay area has a hiking trail offering magnificent views for advanced hikers. This takes 4 – 5 hours each way and is dog and cycle free.
The Mercury Islands are best known for diving and nature conservation. The islands are recognised as being extremely important bird breeding areas for some critically endangered species.. The largest island is privately owned but the public are allowed to visit. Be certain that you have an appropriate camera with you to capture this beautiful area.
One of the most popular holiday spots in Coromandel, Whangamata holds the mantra of sun, sea, surf, and sand. The long sandy beach with great waves pulls in surfers drawn to this laid-back summer town. For those who want to discover a different type of beach scene, you can also visit Opoutere Beach, a wildlife wonder and a protected breeding ground for the New Zealand Dotterol. There's even more wildlife waiting at the Whenuakura Island Sanctuary with its kayak and paddleboard tours across the lush clear lagoon. Wentworth Falls is also a notable hike tucked away in the Coromandel Forest Park.
